For many US homeowners, hurricanes are a very real threat, and some regions face the danger of them more often than others. We’ve all seen the damage that hurricanes can cause to homes and other buildings, so it would be perfectly within reason to wonder whether solar panels can hold up against high winds and driving rains.
Let’s take a closer look:
Testing and real world performance
Aside from flooding, much of the damage and devastation caused by hurricanes, is down to strong winds and that can quickly switch direction as the hurricane passes, and run (or should we say, blow!) amok. When a roof with solar panels is struck by a hurricane, high winds typically cause major issues with uplift, since the panels are elevated slightly above the surface of the roof. As the wind gusts between the roof and the panels, uplift is caused.
Fortunately, good solar panel systems are designed to withstand the force of uplift, and the panels are secured to the roof beams with large lag bolts. Provided the roof is solid and was installed properly, no amount of uplift will be able to rip those panels from the roof.
When solar panels are tested by manufacturers, a certification is included that tests the panels for their ability to withstand winds of up to 140 mph, which is the equivalent of a category 4 hurricane. Typically, should any issues with solar panels arise during a hurricane, it will be due to the entire roof being destroyed by the force of the winds, or the homes structure, not damage to the panels themselves.
How solar manufacturers are continuing to improve their product
In some states and municipalities, standards have put into place that require solar panels to be able to withstand winds of at least 160 mph, such as in Florida, while Texas requires panels to withstand winds of up to 110 mph.
With certain standards in place and reputable manufacturers selling panels that meet all of those standards, coupled with vendors who instal solar power systems responsibly, there should be no reason why your home can’t reap all of the benefits of a solar panel system, even during a hurricane.
Should you still have concerns about the safety of a solar panel system in the event of a hurricane, or wish to discuss the benefits of switching to solar power today, reach out to a local solar energy provider and take your first steps towards a sunnier future!
